Five Feared Dead As Nigeria Police Killed Five Members Of Shiite In Abuja Yesterday

Nigeria Police on Monday killed 5 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) also known as Shiites over agitations for the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim ElZakzaky, who has been unlawfully detained for over two years, during a face-off between Police and Members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (El-Zakzaky) in Abuja yesterday.

The protesters, Monday afternoon, converged at the head office of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, with the remains of a member of the sect who died last Thursday at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano from gunshot injuries he sustained in the head during last week's clash.

It was gathered that their aim was to prevail on the Commission to receive the corpses for purposes of an independent autopsy and documentation.
However, as they were been addressed by the ActingExecutive Secretary of the Commission, Mrs. Oti Ovrawah, a team of security agents stormed the NHRC headquarters demanding that the protesters depart immediately.
Few minutes later, the security agents, receiving orders from above・began to teargas the protesters as well as officials of the Commission including the Executive
Secretary.

As the people ran for their safety, the security agents released live ammunition on the protesters leaving five persons killed and many others severely injured.
The Secretary, Academic Forum of IMN, decried the use of force on the sect, while Fulani roam the streets with AK47, killing indigenous people and destroying their properties, but maintained that they would not relent in agitating for ElZakzaky's release.
